Cat's Meow

"Do the Charleston!  Do the Charleston!"

"It's the cat's meow!"

The Roaring Twenties...a decade of nonstop carefree fun for women.

Yes!  Excellent start to this post, first-time guest blogger, Sarah Adams, thought to herself...but what else?  Blogger's block.  She had a deadline to meet for this post, so a mental block could not have come at a worse time.  Stretch your imagination, Sarah thought to herself.

Let's see.  If I lived in the 1920s...

"We are strong!  We are independent!  We can vote!  We are proud women!"

"Suffrage!"

"We define our lives!"

"We are flappers!"

"We are Chanel girls!"

"We follow...No, we set the trends!"

Short skirts, freedom of choice in clothing overall, freedom of choice in use of makeup

Short bob hairstyle

Trendsetting haute couture

Fashion - smart and sophisticated, independent, very casual

Bold, daring, pushing the envelope for women in the 1920s...because they could.

Break the rules.  Own your feminism.

Show a little of this.  Show a little of that.  You are a woman.

No longer live under the man's rule.

Define your life under your terms.

Yeah!  Wait, where am I?

Once lost in thought, now back on track.  Blogger's block no longer.

For Sarah, daydreaming life in the Roaring Twenties was the perfect inspiration for her first guest blog post.

By Her Side Series 3 - Father of the Bride

By Her Side Series

"My little angel."

"Daddy, you are making me cry," she spoke, wiping away swelling happy tears.

"Oh honey, I...I am sorry.  They are hap...happy tears, right?  Yes.  Oh dear, now I am a mess."

Father and daughter laughed, grabbing tissue after tissue to wipe away the many tears.

He cleared his throat and said,

"There is something you need to know about your wedding gown.  Your mother and I wanted to share its history with you on the day of your wedding."

"Okay," she spoke in hesitation.

"The gown you are wearing has been passed down the family tree on your mother's side for more than a century.  The first bride to wear the gown was your great-great-grandmother, Maria Jane Coleman.  She designed and made the dress herself, knowing the history it would unfold."

Maria turned to face the standing mirror and deeply focused on the dress she never knew had such an extensive history.

Off white ballgown.  Large puffy shoulders.  Thick long sleeves.  Chest coverage as high as the middle of the neck.  No train, but long veil.  All satin (with exception of the veil having tulle fabric).

No trace of wear...ever.  So how would she know?

One other question -

"Dad, am I named after..."

My name is Maria Jane, she thought to herself.  She never knew.  She only assumed the name was unique to her.

"Never..."

"Yes you are," he said, answering her question before she asked and finishing her realized thought before she could complete the word "never mind."

"Dad, why do you call me your angel?"

"Because of her.  She has been loved dearly all this time and is a forever angel by every generation's side."

Knock, knock

"Come in," Maria called out one last time.

"It's time," said the wedding planner.

"Shall we?" he asked with raised arm.

On this day, so many loved ones were by her side.  In spirit, Maria was not alone.  Maria Jane Coleman stood by her side as she walked slowly down the long church aisle in a gown to pass on to a daughter she would one day have.

By Her Side Series 2 - Mother of the Bride

"My precious Maria, I will always remember you playing dress up with my makeup and jewelry.  You tried so hard to fit into my clothes and heels.  So adorable!"

Mother and daughter laughed at the silly childhood memory.

"I still remember laying out your wedding gown and daydreaming wearing it someday on my wedding day."

"And now here you are - a daydream come true.  Lovely.  Absolutely lovely."

"As my mother - mother of the bride - you are lovely as well.  As my mom, you are timeless and classic in fashion.  You taught me well with all of the years you worked in the fashion industry.  I remember going to photo shoots with you and looking at the window displays when you were a visual merchandiser.  Do you remember sharing your first personal shopping trip with your very first client?  And your first styling session?"

Her mom lightly laughed and said,

"So many years ago and yes I still recall all of those many memories."

"Special memories passed down and to be treasured.  Mom, you are my inspiration.  You are my reason for being a fashion stylist.  Without your guidance, I would not be the person I am today, especially with  my career.

"Look how beautiful you are...dare say stealing the show," she said with a happy smile.

"Oh honey..."

Pastel pink satin fitted gown with pastel pink cashmere wrap.  Pastel pink suede kitten heels.  Sterling silver necklace with small but ornate silver locket...Inside, a photo of Maria's mother holding her daughter shortly after birth.  White rose corsage.  Dark blonde hair gathered into a bun with a clear crystal bun cuff.

Knock, knock

"Come in," Maria called out.

"Honey, it's time.  Oh look at you, my little angel."

"Daddy, you will make me cry..."

By Her Side Series 1 - Maid of Honor

"You are so beautiful, Maria.  I am truly honored to be your maid of honor.

"And Christopher is so lucky.  I cannot imagine two people more perfect for each other, more meant to be, more in love, and more prepared for the journey of marriage.  I am certain, then, how happy and content married life will be for you two."

"I do love Christopher so much.  He will always be my soulmate.  I am so happy for me!"

The two laughed at Maria's eager exclamation.

"In all seriousness, though, you are beautiful too, Cindy.  And I should be so honored to have you by my side this evening.  You are my best gal pal..."

The two lifelong best friends lightly laughed at their special nickname, tears beginning to form at the corners of their eyes.

"Oh gosh, Maria, there goes our makeup."

"Oh no!  Oh I don't care.  Happy tears can ruin our makeup.  But you...you are a stunning maid of honor.  The dress you chose is breathtaking.  Navy blue is a gorgeous color on you."

Navy blue satin A-line dress with sweetheart neckline and wide straps.  Long silver heart pendant necklace.  Navy blue suede low heels.  White carnation and green leaf mix bouquet.  Long jet black hair styled with clear crystal bobby pins on either side.

If not for being maid of honor at her best friend's lavish wedding, she would be a breathtaking bride in her gown.  She knew she would impress her boyfriend, Dustin, of so many years when the ceremony was set to begin.  (He in fact was going to propose at the end of the reception.)

Knock, knock

"Come in," Maria called out.

"It's time," said her wedding planner.

Cue the violin.

"Congratulations, Maria.  I love you, best gal pal."

Cindy walked arm in arm with the best man down the aisle.

Today was Maria's day, but her maid of honor was by her side.

Author's Note : M'O Fan Favorite

In today's edition of Author's Note, I thought I would share a fan favorite story from the archives.

Today's fan favorite is M'O - my first post on Couture Tales.

The couture fashion behind M'O was inspired by couture luxury designers I studied on Polyvore (no longer in business) culminating into this one story.

With this said, take a trip down memory lane and enjoy once again, M'O.

Paparazzi

"Jules!  Jules!" shouts from eager paparazzi with shimmering camera flashes much like sparkling diamonds.

Juliet "Jules" Hennessey was a global A-list actress known for her breadth of film, television, and vocal performances.  Her leading roles in film led to several Oscar nominations and wins.  Her leading roles in television led to several Emmy nominations and wins, as well as long-term syndication with translation in many countries (and to further mention substantial royalties on a weekly basis).  She was profoundly talented in so many ways, but Hollywood was not her first passion.

Jules simply loved designing fashion jewelry.  When she was much younger, she dabbled in jewelry sketches but soon realized that drawing was not one of her many talents.  She was self-taught in design and learned how to physically make jewelry of all kinds by carefully studying online video tutorials.  Time, perseverance, some frustration, and admittedly a few tosses in the garbage led her to now.  She used only the best - Swarovski crystals of all sizes and textures, genuine gemstones of all sizes and textures, Swarovski pearls, glass multi-colored beads, pendants, charms, faux leather, decorative flower petal spacer beads, gold and silver metal chains, gold and silver metal plating, and silver wire.

She made necklaces, from chokers to long pendants to fancy pearls to bold statements with large gemstones (some with metal chains, some with string wire, and all with a lobster clasp).

She made bracelets, from charms to beaded stretch to cuffs to leather stud wraps (the charm bracelets were secured as a toggle or lobster clasp and the leather wraps were secured with a snap button).

She made earrings, from studs to dainty drops to hoops of all sizes to delicate designs using a mix of small crystals and small gemstones (all with a variety of backings).

She made adjustable sized rings lavishly decorated with encrusted crystals.  She hoped to someday learn how to design fashion rings with a wedding theme.

Her love was just a hobby.  Yet her hobby soon became a small business when she found enough time to focus on her designs.  Her small business soon became a booming business with hired assistants.

Her designs were a phenomenal success in mass and small retail and among fellow celebs.  She briefly considered leaving Hollywood to focus solely on her jewelry business, but knew that her fans nonetheless wanted to see her on screen.

And so while Juliet was a famous actress ranked highly among critics, Jules was ranked highly for her jewels.

Sparkling paparazzi camera flashes shimmered especially at jewels worn by Jules.

Red Carpet

January  - A new year.  New resolutions.  New chances.  Fresh start.

January - New chances.  New hopes.  Start the year in the best way possible with the awards season.

January - Her birthday month.  She was unknown for so many years.  Who is Charlotte Reese?  Her name was always last at the end of the film credits.  By that point, of course, most of the theater goers had already left.  All she ever knew was being a B-Lister with hit or miss role opportunities.  She aspired to the coveted A-list.  In this month of January, her luck might change.  On this cool January evening in Southern California, Charlotte Reese got a new chance and new hope by making her first appearance on the famous Hollywood red carpet as the presenter for best supporting actress.

She was so nervous!  Backtrack.  She did not have a personal stylist for one reason - She was a B-list actress throughout her entire career and always gone without notice.  This was frustrating and painful because acting was her greatest passion and want in life.  She sorrowfully considered giving up and leaving the state altogether...until a minor part in a now nominated film by a landslide caught the attention of highly regarded critics.  She now had outstanding offers coming in and full marketing coverage by a nationally recognized public relations firm.  She left her last agent to sign on with a major talent agency.  Present time.  She still did not have a personal stylist but had a wide selection of designers to choose from.  Charlotte Reese was an official A-Lister with this evening's red carpet appearance as official proof.

"Charlotte!  Charlotte!"

Celebrities went on a first name basis on the red carpet, but that fact was nonetheless surreal to her.

"Charlotte!"

She was encouraged to chat with a reporter.

"Charlotte, first of all congratulations on being here..."

"Thank you."

"...This is your first time on the red carpet.  How does this experience feel to you?  Are you nervous?"

"This experience is a whirlwind of emotions.  Pure happiness best sums up the feeling.  And honestly yes, I am nervous..."

Both lightly laughed.

"...But I am just honored to be here, so."

"Hollywood is honored to have you here.  Well, you look beautiful.  As you know, I have to ask."

Charlotte lightly laughed and knew how to answer -

"Julie Bent design.  She is new to high profile designing - not that I am high profile!  Anyway, the dress is inspired in two ways - 1920s flapper gal because I concentrated on that time in United States history in college, and and the category I am presenting.  One of the actresses is in a 1920s era movie.  Love both apparently."

The seasoned reporter happily laughed and briefly noted her opinion.

"Shimmering A-line gold fabric, gold sequins, and delicate straps.  Your dress and Julie Bent's creative design are certainly the ones to beat.  Have a great time, Charlotte."

"Thank you."

Reporter after reporter with the same commentary.  Her same response.  Always a thank you at the end.

Charlotte Reese was very thankful.

She truly was having a great time and admitted to herself that she could get used to Hollywood attention.

...& Glam

Their ten-month anniversary.

Rich, bold, statement, colorful glitz purchased.  Now to find the best outfit to match the luxury jewels - Glam.

She had deeper pockets with what she knew she wanted to wear - up to $250.

Some time ago, she was window shopping in the local mall if only to daydream someday inspiration.  She stopped in front of Luxe Boutique, her absolute most favorite (and most expensive apparel) shop in the mall.  Luxe Boutique lived up to its name - pure luxury with designers only the wealthy could buy.  She, however, was on an everyday budget.  One day, she found a must have outfit that she once fell in love with before but could not afford at the time - a plum colored, slip on silk couture dress.  The original asking price was $200.  The dress came with matching plum colored, suede low heels.  The original asking price was $100.

On this one day, when the must-have outfit may not be, she was happily surprised to find a half-off sale.  She casually strolled through the boutique to take in the experience of luxury, but
soon made her must have purchase.  With the sale, then, her discount meant she could save $150...perfect for complimentary makeup at the couture cosmetics department.

Glitz and glam up, their ten-month anniversary arrived.

"You are gorgeous, sweetheart."

"You are rather handsome yourself, my dear."

The clink of champagne glasses.

"Ten months already.  I am the luckiest man.  I love you so much."

"Ten months indeed and long-term certainly.  I love you, too."

A loving kiss.

Glitz...

Their ten-month anniversary.

Jewels would define the outfit...Glitz.

She was on a relatively modest budget for the jewelry - no more than $100.

Their relationship had difficult moments, so on this very special occasion, she wanted to make a statement with her fashion choice to impress him.

She did not have pierced ears, so earrings were ruled out.  She opted out of buying a ring just in case...

Statement necklace or statement bracelet?  Silver-plated or gold-plated?  Rhodium-plated or rose gold-plated?  Clear crystal or sparkling colorful crystal?  How detailed?  Length?  Type of clasp?  She could not decide until she found the perfect...

Matching pair!

She was exploring the Internet for ideas and came across a really cool and intriguing direct sales company, Starry Night.  She found a stylist in her area and decided to support this person's entrepreneurial business by making a purchase.

A long necklace with statement bouquet pendant and toggle bracelet with matching statement bouquet features.  The primary color was plum with intricate colors creating the bouquet design - topaz, forest green, ruby, pumpkin orange, and dark brown.  Rich Autumn colors for this Autumn season.

They met in January.  Their anniversary was in October.

The original cost for the pair was $200.  On this particular day, Starry Night was running a special just for new customers - a half off sale.  Jewels once so rich now affordable on deep discount and on budget.

Senior Year Special

"Yes!" exclaimed one lucky senior during mid-day study break.

"Quiet!" exclaimed a fellow senior during mid-day study break.

Mid-day study break during senior year was generally not taken seriously, especially at this time of year.  Textbook information for final exams was memorized long ago (although a few continued to study nonetheless), so the lucky senior's exclamation was overlooked.  (The other senior did not plan on taking in the senior year special.)

"I will," said another lucky senior during a lunch hour outing.

"Of course, I will," said a third lucky senior, caught off guard.

"Okay," said yet again another lucky senior in a rather unusual acceptance tone as the two parted ways in the seniors-only parking lot.

"Sure, why not," said another lucky senior as casually as possible because the two were merely friends and had only one class together this year (therefore the only chance to ask and accept).

Many seniors throughout Washington High School were either proposing or accepting.  This atmosphere for seniors was exceptionally palpable and looked forward to for quite some time and was seasonal - prom season.  Every senior girl looked forward to being asked to prom.

Prom, as the senior year special, was like a dream for the young men and young women.  The couples, in this moment, were meant to be and the proposals were akin to engagement to marriage.  Some couples were high school sweethearts since freshman year.  Some couples began dating at  the beginning of the year.  Some couples were best friends for some time and attending prom together just made sense.  Stray seniors here and there went to prom alone just to say they went to prom.

The dress code for the senior year special was exceptionally formal...as prom would be.  The young men were handsome as they wore polished bespoke tuxedos...much the way a groom would.  Young women were breathtaking in affordable couture gowns, affordable couture makeup and hair styling, and a silver-plated or gold-plated promise ring offered to them by their dates...somewhat like a bride.

The young men and women took dance lessons offered by the school's student affairs department.  Dance lessons were common for brides and grooms to be.

In the history of Washington High School, popular students went on weekend trips following prom.  These trips were very much a part of the prom experience.  These trips included young adult activities obvious to the seniors not appropriate for their age, but nonetheless part of the prom experience.  The trips, like the formal attire, were akin to bride and groom celebration with a honeymoon.

Senior year in Washington High School offered amazing perks, from designated parking to first period off and coming in late or last period off and leaving early to eating lunch out to shadowing a teacher in lieu of class to the cafeteria designated for study hall when not in lunchtime use to end of year senior class celebration bashes (school sponsored events, ditch day, time off after graduation ceremony preparation, day of choosing off after final exams).  Graduation would forever be the hallmark of hard work and perseverance leading to student success.

The senior year special, then, was the perfect cap to four long years.

The Proposal

Lauren and Danny met in their junior year of college.  Their common bond was a major in History and a love for United States history, especially during the 1960s.  This summer course is where they first met.  They were always first in the classroom, so they took the available time to talk about anything or quiz each other before an exam.  The way they made each other laugh, be sarcastic, be serious, listen intently, openly share personal subjects...They both wanted more than friendship after some time, but the question "Do you want to go out some time?" was never asked.  At the end of the course, she finished the final exam before he did and left knowing she may never see him again.  A summer friendship fling, she supposed.

Two years later, their paths crossed out of the blue.  She was finishing her undergraduate degree and he was working on his Master's thesis.

On one crisp and beautiful sunny Autumn afternoon, they bumped into each other just outside of her classroom.

"Oh sorry," she said without paying attention, head down.

"Lauren?"

She looked up to see him.  Her heart skipped a beat.  She couldn't believe this stroke of luck.

"Oh my gosh, Danny!  Hi."

"How are you...stranger?"

She lightly laughed and replied,

"Busy.  How are you?"

"Busy too.  The amount of work I have to put into my thesis is exhausting."

"Thesis.  Your Master's?"

"Yep."

"What is the subject matter?"

"Racial segregation in United States educational institutions as of Brown versus Board of Education."

"Impressive."

"Thank you.  Hey, um, do you want to get a cup of coffee or something some time?"

"Oh gosh, Danny, so much time as passed and I am really very busy.  Why didn't you ever ask me out then?"

"I...I was nervous.  I guess I was afraid I would wreck our friendship if I asked and you said no."

"I wouldn't have said no, Danny..."

She hesitated for a brief moment and replied,

"All right."

The cup of coffee lasted for hours...reminiscing, catching up, daydreaming their degree futures.  Their shared sense of humor was not lost.  Their respect of knowing when to be serious was not lost.  Track of time between then and now did not exist.  They were on the date meant to be so long ago.

Reminiscing led to a second date.

The second date led to more and into a relationship.

Lauren and Danny were meant to be, with shared interests and goals.  They made sense together.  They were perfect together.  They fell in love so many years ago, but never knew it.  Yet now they knew their love for each other was truly meant to be and in fact last.

On one crisp and beautiful sunny Autumn afternoon, on the campus where they first met, there was one question Danny needed to ask now -

"Lauren, will you marry me?"

Students passing by took notice and clapped for the couple's happiness.

She could not see the stunning diamond engagement ring for her swelling happy tears but could see him clear enough to say "Yes" and give him a loving yes.

Students stopping to clap for the couple's happiness collectively said "awe."

So many years ago, being asked out seemed to be the right question.  Now...the proposal was the perfect question.

Ashley's Consign Shop

Ashley Simmons was the definition of a girly girl fashionista - only the prettiest of color palettes in interior design, personal appearance looks, apparel style, fashion forward in every way.

Ashley aspired to small business ownership after college graduation.  She knew her business had to relate to fashion specifically.

One day, Ashley was perusing a local consignment store and noticed the labels...all high-end luxury brands generally not possible on a realistic budget but over half off on consignment.  The more she explored, the more she realized consignment as a business would be a neat (and hopefully profitable) idea.

She continued to look around and decided to make a purchase as part of the experience - a purse, sunglasses, and cute blouse.  As a proud fashionista, Ashley knew what these items were really worth and so felt her heart drop in shock with the discount savings she was sure to receive.

As she approached the checkout counter, she noticed a "Help Wanted" sign next to the register.

The owner, sitting at the register, noticed what Ashley had on hand and briefly commented,

"Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg.  Excellent selections."

Ashley was rather excited to have these names of her own and so did not hear the remarks.

"Hi!  Um, are you still hiring?"

The owner took cue that she did not hear his remarks and replied to her question in a louder voice.

"Well hell to you!  We, actually are in a transitional phase - focusing on a younger demographic.  So we are looking to hire direct to partnership."

"That sounds intriguing!"

"I take it you may be interested?  Would you like to consider this opportunity?  I don't have a business card on hand at the moment, though...Sorry."

"That's okay.  I honestly would love to consider the opportunity!  I studied business in college, so I know the terminology.  I follow every fashion trend on a seasonal basis, so I am well-versed in the industry.  I know exactly what customers say my age - twenties - like and would buy, so I understand marketing.

"I would personally recommend deeper discounts in general, such as more than 50% off, and enticing deals for special holiday occasions - any major special holiday occasion.

"I again would consider displaying a guest list with email addresses and birthdays so you can send weekly newsletters and birthday specials."

"Wow.  Impressive!  College served you well and all of the knowledge you gained on your own!"

"Thank you!  Ashley beamed as she impressed even herself.

"What is your name, young lady?"

"Ashley Simmons."

"Hello Ashley.  My name is Samuel.  I will be upfront - how would you like to be my personal consultant?  The pay would be salaried at entry level for the first year and if you truly prove yourself beyond now, there would be a significant raise over time.  Should you  further be interested, I would love to have you as shop manager to oversee inventory from the current stock to what should be bought.  Pricing would be the most important part of the managerial position.  Income for the manager role would be an additional hourly pay at entry level.  You have profound promise in your future, Ms. Simmons.  If you accept, think of this consignment shop as yours!"

She was speechless with joy and happily accepted the job (consultant and manager).

Ashley had her own consign shop.

Jazz Scene

"It's all in the swing, my jazzin' friend!" A beaming shout out to the jazz club from quite the stylish Marcus as he led his big band into the early hours of the morning.  Applause, cheers, another round of drinks, lit cigarettes, chit chat, second dates, intrigued tourists, mostly locals taking in the profound musical atmosphere and experience with a deep and happy sigh.

The evening look - T-shirt dress and slip on sneakers for her and trousers, rolled up sleeves, tie, and loafers for him.  Jazz into the night.

"Give me a beat, Joe."  A one and a two and a three.  The drums welcomed the sunrise on the other side of town.  Five o'clock morning breakfast and classic jazz with soft brushes, bass, and brass was an okay way to start the day.  A warm croissant with melted butter, apple cinnamon oatmeal, a mixed fruit bowl, and a cup of coffee with half & half awoke the palette.  The grassy dew and hint of early morning summer warmth set the outdoor atmosphere.  The indoor atmosphere was calm, quiet, and intimate.  Cigarette smoke lingered in the air.  No applause, no cheers, perhaps a mimosa, little chit chat with most in the club being alone at their tables, enjoying the musical atmosphere as any other day.  The jazz club was sparse in the morning.  The band still played to an audience they knew well.  Those there could easily fall asleep with the hushed instrumental tones.  But no, they were there for the experience.

The early morning casual look - three quarter sleeve button down top and slim jeans for her and casual tee and rugged jeans for him.  Jazz through the morning.  The work week was over, so the thought of formal attire was long behind them...

Formal attire was always a must for the big band leaders lighting up the morning, noon, and night.  Zoot suits were in style long after they should have retired.  Three-piece suits jazzed up the night - trousers, blazer, shimmering vest, cuffed shirt, moderately sized tie, and pocket square.  Basic suits coasted through the day, playing for the lunch break audience.  A suit with looser tie woke up the morning.

It's all in the swing.  It's all in the jazzin' look.

Rock 'n Roll

The sold-out concert was tonight.  The meet-and-greet session was to follow.  The ticket (being in the front row, right side, directly next to the speakers) was ready to go...but she was not.  Her closet didn't scream "Deep Down!" (her favorite heavy metal music band playing tonight).  Her closet, rather, sounded more like a gavel tapping on the judge's desk with every "case closed" she tried.  Upscale closet, but somehow always boring.

By day, Stephanie Williams was a successful prosecutor and junior partner at Mason, Peterson, & Davids Law.  For this reason, she was always polished, formal, and serious.  Her income afforded upscale, but never anything impressive outside of the office.  She wore pantsuits or skirts with a blouse and blazer.  There was no sense of fun in Stephanie's demeanor.

Stephanie, however, was only in her mid-30s.  She did in fact have a nightlife with a drink or two every Friday after work at the local bar.  She was friends with a few of her co-workers outside of the office, so they got together from time to time to chit chat about anything but work.  Her weekend coffee order was memorized by local baristas quite some time ago.  Her occasional bite to eat at the local sandwich shop during weekday lunch hours were just as memorized.  Nonetheless, as her job was very stressful and did not allow time to actively socialize outside of the office, Stephanie turned to music to unwind.  She liked nearly every genre but gravitated toward heavy metal.  The intensity of the music turned down the volume of her day to day life.

Deep Down never considered or performed in the small city she lived in (with a population of just a few thousand) and they generally were not keen on fan meet-and-greets (well known for deep privacy), so tonight was very special.

What to wear?!  She grabbed her keys and headed to the mall.  There was a grunge, rock themed apparel store she knew would be perfect.

She blushed in a deep rose shade when she shook their hands.

"Hi Stephanie," "Nice to meet you, Stephanie," and "Don't be shy, Stephanie" was the chorus from the lead singer, bass guitarist, electric guitarist, and drummer.

"Your outfit is really cool," said the drummer (her most favorite member and helpless crush).

"Oh gosh, these old clothes...but thank you!"

He lightly laughed, gently tapped her shoulder, said "You're welcome," and moved on to the next fan.

Black asymmetric camisole with "Rock Rules" in all caps and blue sequins declared over a white electric guitar on the front.  Medium wash, boot cut jeans with rip tears at the knees.  Black suede, chunky heel booties.  Black leather clutch with silver embossed skull on the front ("Skull" happened to be the band's most popular song among fans, well received song by critics, and overall iconic song for the band to date).  Fake colorful strands to blend into her dark blonde hair.

Seth Tyson (the drummer) liked my outfit!  She happily screamed in her head.

What a night.

The Crown

White fur rim.  Velvet deep rose red base.  Velvet purple hues rising from the base, from misty lavender to deep purple rising to the pointed top.  White fur bands every few inches apart rising up and down from the rim to the pointed top.  Clear Swarovski crystals encrusting throughout to the pointed top.  Emerald and gold, as the royal colors, stitching just above the rim.  A spiraled shape diamond on point.  The royal coat of arms prominently placed in the center with emerald and gold stitching.  Approximately one and a half pounds in weight.  The crown.

Pomp and circumstance was inherent in the Camden royal family.  Every birth into the family and every sorrowful passing came with traditional affair.

Every wedding defined royal tradition.  The engagement ring was passed down every other generation.  The gown was sketched and made by a highly esteemed international designer as chosen by the queen and bride personally and secretly.  No one saw the gown until the day of the wedding.

The plush red carpet felt the elegant heels and leather loafers worn by every guest, every family member, the maid of honor and bridesmaids, best man and groomsmen, groom's parents, bride's parents, groom, sitting queen and king, and finally the bride greeted by shouts of excitement to see her and, of course, the coveted wedding gown.

The queen and king were introduced to the church in a covered carriage led by horses approved by the queen and king.  The bride was introduced to the church in a covered carriage led by horses of her choosing.

In Camden royalty, the bridal tiara is handcrafted by the family's personal jewelry designer and passed down from generation to generation.  When the tiara becomes an antique, it is prominently displayed in the royal museum and the exact design is replicated.  The tiara - White platinum, encrusted diamonds and fresh water pearls gathered to a regal point.

The bride is a princess.

In Camden royalty, there is a unique wedding day tradition.  When the ceremony is coming to a close, the queen slowly removes the tiara and attached tulle veil, gently hands it to the maid of honor, and places her royal crown on top of the bride's head.  The bride may wear the crown until midnight.  In this one special day, the bride as a princess is now the queen.  This royal tradition is one the most anticipated by the crowd on every royal wedding day.

Pomp and circumstance followed the closing of every royal wedding ceremony.  Where the groom and bride were last to enter the church, they were now first to leave the church.  Church bells tolled.  A multi-karat gold and exquisitely designed carriage with royal coat of arms etched all around awaited the newlyweds.  The interior was lined with designated red carpet cut from that used in the ceremony.  The carriage was led by horses of the bride and groom's choice.

Where cheers were as loud as the church bells, the singing of the Camden royal hymn skyrocketed in volume.

When the bride emerged as the new princess and now queen for this one special day, due honor from the crowd was required.

The queen required due honor.

The crown required due honor.

The crown.

Author's Note : Couture Tales Inspiration

My Couture Tales inspiration is many fold.

I love to blog, I love to write fiction, and I am fascinated by couture fashion.

Life as a blogger and life as a creative fiction writer came about in the same year - 2010.  Strong interest in couture fashion came four years late.

Creative fiction and couture fashion drive the most impact on the launch of Couture Tales.

In 2010, I drafted a young adult fantasy fiction novel and children's short story anthology.  Although neither were picked up for publication, I still loved to write.  In 2012, I drafted poetry and stand alone short stories.  The market for both was exceptionally limited and my work did not stand out as much as I had hoped.  Nonetheless, I still loved to write.  Blogger is my best love for writing.

In 2014, I stumbled upon the fashion brand, Chloe + Isabel.  The jewelry and accessories left me in awe and I really wanted to be a part of the community.  I was accepted in a heartbeat.  My love for fashion grew from Chloe + Isabel and I was set when I found Polyvore.  I self-taught myself the world of fashion, from basic terminology to advanced studies of couture designer styles.  My interest turned into love and eventually into passion.  I dared to apply for stylist positions once I felt comfortable to justify my lack of formal training.  Although I did not land employment, my passion for couture fashion remained strong.  I felt that an outlet needed to be found to showcase my interest.

I turned to my roots in blogging where I could combine fiction with a fashion theme.

Chloe + Isabel and Polyvore inspired Couture Tales.  My love for fiction inspired Couture Tales.  My love for blogging provided the perfect format for writing and publishing.

The Assistant

Liz Wilson was thoroughly educated in fashion buying.  She graduated at the top of her class and was promised hope of employment during an internship.  In the end, the internship was just an internship.  Nonetheless, her sight was set on women's ready to wear by her favorite designer, Molly Greene.  Her style was bold, colorful, unique, and daring.  Every F/W season and S/S season kept established buyers on their toes because Molly Greene was inventive and never recycled her signature brand.  For this reason, Liz's closet was filled with Molly Greene clothes.

The Molly Greene website showed an opening for assistant buyer.  Liz was in excited shock and applied in a heartbeat...

...She did not get the job.  In pure devastation, she boldly asked why...for future reference of course.

"Lack of experience" was the common response.  Liz was more and more furious by this response because she just graduated and would naturally have no experience.  How, then, would she be able to get a job?  At this point, Liz was submitting applications on a daily basis to anyone offering an interview.

She owed in student loans and was increasingly nervous about the possibility of collections knocking on her apartment door.  She needed a job now.

Liz knew the fashion industry well, followed all trends - men, women, jewelry, accessories - and was fully prepared to be a buyer.  Major designers were not hiring at her level.  Indie designers looked for established applicants with experience to more professionally boost their sales.  She simply could not catch a break!

One day, Liz was scrolling through updated online job boards and came across an assistant position.  She was more than qualified and applied immediately.

The job - Personal Assistant to a luxury bridal salon owner.

After a thorough interview, she was hired...and after some time was promoted to assistant buyer.

A job is a job.

The Merchandiser

Ella Thompson graduated from York City's most esteemed fashion institute - The Art of Fashion - with a degree in fashion merchandising in 2013.  She earned her Bachelor's with high honors and special acknowledgement in her acute analytical skills.  Ella was eager to begin in her job search in a field guaranteed not to let her down...

In 2014, Ella was tapped out in rejection after rejection, search after search.  The fashion merchandising field was exceptionally popular and therefore oversaturated in applications.  She began looking for anything related to fashion, now not just what she was trained for.

One day, Ella felt a bit frivolous in her online endeavor and stumbled upon Crystals & Gemstones, a fashion jewelry direct sales company looking to hire an assistant buyer.  Buyers and merchandisers work alongside together, so...Oh my God, she thought to herself in the most ecstatic of ways.  She immediately emailed a cover letter and resume to the Human Resources department.  After daily inbox checks, one week later...

To: Ella Thompson
From: Sandy Nickels
Subject: Crystals & Gemstones Employment Offer

Dear Ms. Thompson:

I have reviewed your resume.  Although your education and honors are impressive (...),

(Ella was certain she knew where this email would lead, despite "Employment Offer.")

(...) your work experience is admittedly lacking.  With this said, I believe you have potential and so every graduate naturally has to start somewhere.  I would like to offer you the entry level sales position titled Merchandiser.  Once you achieve the minimum sales goal of $500, I would very much like to discuss the assistant buyer position as a transition.  Feel free to respond if you have any questions.  Otherwise, should you be interested welcome aboard!

Sincerely,
Sandy Nickels

A silent shout out -

I'm a Merchandiser!

Look Book Season

Stories beautifully describing enchanting international locales in a way that made the stylists and customers feel transcended in time and place.  Imaginary passports were ready with every look book season.

Explore the festive cultures of Latin America, home to a few celebrities and loved by a few more.

Explore tropical destinations with white sand beaches, clear crystal blue ocean, sipping on drinks out of a coconut shell, lounging in the sunlight with a glowing tan, tike torches lit at night with dining and entertainment that can only be found in tropical destinations.

Explore the rich beauty of Europe, such as England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, and so many other historic gems.

Explore the ancient history that defines the Orient, especially the Great Wall of China and wonders of Japan.

Every look book season was new and fresh, eager to debut and adored upon arrival.  Pages were flipped through slowly to fully digest the background artistic scenes, snippets of stories with each given locale, and detailed product images.

Lovely Wishes was a women's fashion apparel, jewelry, and accessories direct sales company.  Stylists were otherwise known as "Wishful Thinkers."  They had online shops to customize based on personal preference, making them small business owners.Wishful Thinkers began as independent contractors with no startup cost.  Physical look books were the only investment and the investment was free.  Lovely Wishes believed that Wishful Thinkers should run their shops in any way they wished, allowing sole focus on shop profit and not business setback.  Look books, then, generally defined success both online and in person (look book parties in person and "wishful thoughts" for online sales).  Wishful Thinkers earned a flat 30% commission, from new to established.

The apparel, jewelry, and accessories were unique to the brand in design and styles but inspired by known retailers worldwide.  (Copyrights were never violated.)

Lovely Wishes was unique in one other way.  Wishful Thinkers were independent contractors until they accrued $1,000 or more in sales.  The products were priced at appropriate retail cost, but frequent seasonal sales and look book season debut sales made the financial goal possible.  When the goal of $1,000 was met, Wishful Thinkers could opt for being remote employees with standard benefits and stock options.  Income would match entry level employment on an hourly basis.  Company growth was encouraged for those Wishful Thinkers becoming remote employees.  In fact, outside of the founder and CEO of Lovely Wishes, Wishful Thinkers transitioning into remote employment easily reached management and director levels on a remote basis.

Personal success was possible.  Financial success was possible.  Business growth was possible.  Wishful Thinkers on their own were able to earn a substantial income to live on.  Wishful Thinkers choosing to become remote employees with growth potential were able to earn double the substantial income they would have made as independent contractors.  Potential belief was highly encouraged.

Look book season made the shopping experience unique for both customers and Wishful Thinkers.

Lovely Wishes - a penny for your thoughts.

Luxury Showroom

5th Luxe Boutique featured exclusive designers only haute couture in nature.  Established clients need only email their designated personal stylist for a showroom appointment.  New clients were booked for appointments typically six months in advance.  Those merely interested needed to anticipate a year long wait list before any of the stylists had an opening.  Those hoping to schedule a showroom appointment out of pure curiosity were encouraged not to bother.  5th Luxe Boutique had a distinguished reputation to uphold and was admittedly strict in who they accepted as clients.  Established and new clients were financially elite, whether from old money or from superior employment such as acting chief levels in a variety of roles or advanced positions in industries such as law or medicine.  In other words, think green and shiny credit cards with zero credit debt.  Potential clients, in pure honesty, were generally expected to come from wealth too.  5th Luxe Boutique began in the five-figure range and did not have a cap.  Elite wealth with no budget was essential for the boutique to keep open...and this was not a concern.  Commission pay for personal stylists was highly lucrative and therefore kept them and the boutique operating.

5th Luxe Boutique catered primarily to women but did offer bespoke service to discerning men.

5th Luxe Boutique was best known for couture dresses and wedding gowns by designers with international roots.  Customers buying directly for designers, via their websites, were required to put down an initial fee to cover the total cost, shipping and handling, and appropriate tax.  The higher the product cost, the higher the fee.  This was not a concern for the direct customers, of course.

Couture dresses were exceptionally formal in style and well thought out in creation.  Colorful dresses were kept to a minimum to accent the overall designs.  Designs that were outlandish to the average woman were in good class and taste to the average client.  Patterns were understated and enhanced the overall designs.  Ideal occasions to wear these dresses would be going to the theater, attending a black-tie dinner party, being a top wedding guest where over one hundred were invited to attend, perhaps an event with formal embossed invitation...leave the imagination to decide.  The couture dresses were extravagant yet timeless, beautiful in rich design while still maintaining the classic 5th Luxe Boutique style, unique, and limited to certain sizes generally up to a size eight.  Upon decision after the styling appointment, a client would typically pay and the chosen dress would be made  within a six-month time frame and then delivered in white glove manner.

Wedding gowns were exquisite with classic designs being the most popular.  Crystal touches were carefully accented to preserve the beauty of the overall aesthetic.  Lace and satin were the most preferred fabrics.  Ballgowns were the most common designs.  White was the only allowed color for presentation.  If a client desired color for a chosen gown, an extra cost was necessary for the given designer.  Wedding gown designers for 5th Luxe Boutique were exclusive.  A client's purchase process was the same as that of couture dresses, with the exception of necessary fitting appointments where a fee was required for the seamstress.  Wedding gowns generally took more time to make and required in-person pick up.

Original sketches of retired designs and notable signatures were proudly framed and hung around the boutique.

5th Luxe Boutique was an experience to remember.

The Stylist

Shannon Harter was a senior fashion and jewelry stylist at Alain Studio - an online style service for global clientele.  Alain Studio was also a tight knit fashion community where stylists shared personal interests and inspiration with each other.  Stylists kept in touch with their clients via chat for business and email for notes in between sessions.  A true supportive and fun environment.

Shannon was the go-to for her substantial list of clients.  She was the point of service manager for junior stylists and executive manager for stylists in training.  She was further on a management committee in deciding what merchandise would be purchased for style sessions.  In essence, she was an assistant buyer on the management committee.

When Shannon began her career with Alain Studio, she was already established as an entrepreneur.  She launched Harter Style shortly after successful training and somehow took off.  "Somehow" in that her website was just okay and she did not keep up with her blog.  Her growing ;portfolio shined, however, and with the help of family and friends (being test clients themselves) spreading the word about her natural talent, one search result turned into one official style request and simply went from there.

Shannon loved her job with Alain Studio.  Every client was a unique challenge because most were international and cultures had to be respected.

Fashion - Budget.  Size.  Initial preference and work from there.  Preferred brand and work from there.  Time of year.  Type of occasion.  Best fabric combinations.  Best color combinations.  Jeans or trousers.  Wash.  Color.  Length.  Tees or long sleeves.  Casual or formal.  Tank tops or camisoles.  On their own or accented underneath.  Sweaters or sweatshirts.  Yes or no on graphics.  Pattern or solid.  Ankle length, knee length, or mini - dress or skirt.  Leggings or sweatpants.  Blazer, open cardigan, or casual jacket.  Anything else?

Shoes - Budget.  Size.  Initial preference and work from there.  Preferred brand and work from there.  Time of year.  Type of occasion.  Pumps or flats.  Stiletto, chunky, low, or kitten heel.  Wedges or flip flops.  Boots or booties.  Knee boots.  Rain boots.  Leather or suede.  Complimentary color.  Anything else?

Bags - Budget.  Initial preference and work from there.  Preferred brand and work from there.  Time of year (for care purposes).  Type of occasion.  Wallet or clutch.  Purse or tote.  Duffle or hobo.  Complimentary color.  Best fabric combination.  Anything else?

Jewelry - Budget.  Initial preference and work from there.  Preferred brand and work from there.  Type of occasion.  Statement or understated.  Bling or simple. Styles and color combinations.  Basics - Necklaces, Bracelets, Earrings, Rings.  Preferred necklace length and clasp.  Preferred bracelet length and clasp.  Preferred earring length and backing.  Alternatively, clip on earring option.  Preferred ring size.  Basics - Fine, Fashion, Costume (this, of course, would be dependent on budget).  Anything else?

And so many more questions Shannon asked and answered in chat sessions and emails on a daily basis.  Novice stylists were exhausted by the end of the day.  She eagerly worked overtime.  Her clients defined the success of her career.  She may be at senior level, but she always felt a sense of constant learning, especially with new clients.

Shannon never forgot her roots with Harter Style.  She worked with new and existing clients on weekends.  Her weekday priority was Alain Studio.

Life as a stylist through Shannon Harter's eyes was perfect.  Education, hard work, and perseverance made styling as a career ideal.

Second Time Around

"Oh Mom, I am so happy for you.  You truly deserve this joy and spotlight perhaps?"

She lightly laughed and said,

"Yes, I do suppose spotlight."

"You are so beautiful in your gown.  Of course, you are always beautiful."

She faintly sighed in disagreement with her daughter but replied,

"Thank you so much, my love.  Such kind words.  Nonetheless though, I've never really felt entirely beautiful..."

"Oh Mom, you are too hard on yourself."

"I suppose I can be, but in all honesty, I never thought I would look beautiful and in a wedding gown even.  I did not have enough money to afford a dress when I married your father, just a simple skirt and blouse.

"As the story has always gone and well aware to you especially, I was pregnant with you, so I naturally assumed the marriage would last and I would never need to buy a wedding gown...even if we were to celebrate a marriage milestone.  After your twin brothers were born, I definitely didn't get a chance to dress up and look beautiful.  The three of you kept me so busy, hectic, and at times quite frazzled..."

Her daughter lightly laughed because she and her brothers did cause frustration and raucous when they were very young and especially when the boys were teenagers.

"I am being serious, dear."

"I know, Mom.  I'm sorry.  Go on."

"Anyway, I never felt pretty and even feminine.  I know, I know..."

She anticipated her daughter's response before her daughter said anything.

"...After your father and I divorced, I felt horrible.  I thought I was in love but was left heartbroken and devastated.  If I was not meant to be married to your father, I felt like I was not meant for marriage at all.  Before I met Thomas, I was content to just have you and your brothers in my life.  Yet now, Thomas has shown me what love truly is."

She wiped away a tear no longer of sorrow, but of renewed happiness.

"That is a sweet sentiment, Mom.  I will always love Dad because he is my father.  Thomas, though, is the perfect find for you.  The two of you make sense together...far more than you and Dad did at least as we saw you.  I am so, so happy for you.  Thomas is the lucky one."

"Well, he may be the lucky one, but I am even more lucky.  Thomas is generously paying for my real wedding gown in a real bridal salon - luxury to boot..."

The two laughed happily.

"...I am wearing my dream dress by favorite designer and I finally feel beautiful.  I am so happy for me.  Yea to me!"

Mother and daughter laughed in pure joy and happiness.

"Your second time around, Mom.  How do you feel?"

"I feel great.  Let's keep going with the wedding plans!"

They clinked crystal flute glasses and sipped on champagne as she admired herself in the mirror until just before the salon closed.

The wedding plans were certain to be expensive in her second time around.

Noteworthy Look

Angie knew her weight was in unhealthy excess...a general number she would not dare share with anyone.  She knew she was in jeopardy for a number of possible health scares ranging from heart issues to diabetes and too many others she did not want to think about.  She consulted with a physician once but had too much on her mind to fully understand.  She obeyed orders to diet and exercise, which she was already doing.  And so when every Sunday she weighed herself, she wasn't always pleased with her scale reading, despite the minor ups that lasted for just one day.  Yet overall, she embraced her body and self-image because her rental space in Forest Springs Terrace Mall was booming with success.  As odd as this would sound to others, Angie's weight gain was a strike of good luck for her business.  When she was younger and much thinner, she felt a sense of failure in every venture she pursued.  Her clientele felt the same way.

Noteworthy Look was a plus size apparel and accessories shop for women.  As the owner, Angie was proud to cater to "real" women who represent everyday society.  Angie's motto was luxury for the everyday woman.  The everyday woman deserved to look and feel gorgeous and one of a kind.

Noteworthy Look sold sizes 1X to 5X.  Apparel included tummy-control jeans in a variety of washes and styles, easy fit formal trousers in a variety of colors, casual tees with and without intriguing graphics, stylish blouses, maxi dresses and knee length dresses for any season, stretch leggings, pajama gowns and sets, one-piece swimsuits and wraps, raincoats, winter coats, jean jackets in a variety of washes, ankle length skirts, knee length skirts, flowy skirts in a variety of patterns, sweaters, hoodies, sweatpants, dusters, tank tops in a variety of colors, camisoles, open cardigans, and intimates.

Noteworthy Look sold a variety of jewelry and accessories aimed specifically for plus size women to feel as beautiful as they truly were.  (The jewelry and accessories were admittedly popular with all customers, not just plus size customers.)

Noteworthy Look also sold a variety of shoes, from flip flops for summertime to pumps best for formal occasions and perhaps for business wear as well to stylish high-heeled sandals to fan favorite kitten heels to winter boots to sneakers to Angie's personal love for chunky heels to clogs...Her shoe inventory was as detailed as her apparel!

Noteworthy Look sold bags as well, ranging from clutches to shoulder purses to totes to backpacks to duffel bags to wallets.  Her bag inventory was slightly lower in stock as they were not as in demand.

Angie wanted the shopping experience to be unique, special, and just plain fun.

When women walked into Noteworthy Look to explore and shop, they felt confident and supremely beautiful.

At checkout, customers were encouraged to leave comments in the store notebook.  The most common comments were "Thank you" and "Simply amazing".

Every woman is real, from zero to plus...especially plus.

Treasure Island

The multi-million dollar estate was on the mainland, but the estate sale was to be held at the vacation home in the tropics, as requested by the family.

Everything was up for sale as the family needed to downsize in a significant manner, especially for financial reasons.  In its irony, there was a legitimate cause - the estate was facing bankruptcy and the only way to salvage remaining investment was to hold an estate sale to afford the vacation home which was less expensive and more reasonable to live in.

And so...

Couture apparel, bags, and accessories...all up for sale

Couture household items...all up for sale

Antique trunk...Genuine birthstone crystals, real diamonds, fresh water pearls, multi-karat gold, silver, jewelry galore

The family really did need to downsize, so the antique trunk in the tropical vacation home...up for sale.

Author's Brief - My Polyvore Story

My Polyvore story began in 2014.

In August 2014, I signed on as a Merchandiser with the fashion brand, Chloe + Isabel.  After some time, I launched a blog as a means of promotion for my small business.  I did not feel that a blog was best to settle with.  Cue Polyvore.

I discovered Polyvore through fellow Merchandisers with accounts.  Polyvore was an online community where users could share creative sets in any way they felt inspired.  Women's fashion, men's fashion, home decor, beauty, art, personal expression.  I fell in love after just my first set.

I was considered a Style Spotter for some time while I built up a backlog of sets.  My work was initially focused on promoting Chloe + Isabel jewelry on hand in the Polyvore collection.

I soon became a Style Setter as my sets expanded to women's fashion beyond Chloe + Isabel.  I also dabbled in men's fashion as well.  At this point, I was hooked.

I dedicated hours and days and weeks to reach the coveted title of Style Icon.  By now, I moved on from Chloe + Isabel to growing interest in couture women's fashion.

I began working with couture designer names beginning with Diane von Furstenberg, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel.  The list quickly grew to designers and brands I considered haute couture - claiming price tags untouchable to the everyday woman (and man for some sets).

My Polyvore work inspired a new blog - Haute Couture.  Haute Couture inspired collaboration with the affiliate company, ShopStyle Collective.  I was hooked.  At this point, I was self-teaching myself the world of fashion.

My Polyvore sets and Haute Couture posts were unstoppable, daily to be exact.

Until one fateful day - April 5, 2018.

Polyvore shut down and has been taken over by SSense, an online couture shopping community.

My Polyvore story did not have a happy ending.

My Polyvore story crashed with a devastating and heartbreaking ending.

I feel blue.

The Engagement Ring

The matriarch one century ago passed down to the last woman in the family tree.  She gave the ring to her son.  He would vow the ring as a token of beloved promise to his forever one.

The ring led to engagement.  The engagement led to the wedding.  The wedding led to marriage.  The marriage led to a growing family.

The bride became a wife and soon to become a mother.  She became the new matriarch with engagement ring to pass down from generation to generation.

Golden

GOLDEN

The boutique catered to popular (as defined by society), gorgeous (as defined by society), and family rich 20-somethings who looked for stylish and trendy fashion.  They knew who they were and flaunted their looks - "adore me" mentality.  The boutique, then, was appropriately expensive.  They also flaunted their polished credit cards, earned on their own or borrowed from Mom and Dad.  The atmosphere was booming with music young people liked.  The displays were neat and organized...despite the fashion forward untidy look modeled by mannequins.  Oh yes, the boutique appealed appropriately to an audience eager to shop.

Ripped jeans in light wash (most preferred style), asymmetric camisoles with designs generally most appealing to the 20-somethings, see-thru "sweaters," graphic tees, intimates beyond appropriate to the discerning but must haves to the 20-somethings, and of course skinny everything.  For reasons known only to the boutique, sizes were justified.  If a size six, should be a size four.  If a size two, should be a size zero.  The customer demographic was admittedly limited beyond the 20-somethings knowing what they are aware of on their own but at any rate explained by what society tells them to look like, yet somehow still kept the business open and functioning well.

The boutique director of customer relations, divisional merchandise manager, senior merchandise manager, merchandise manager, and in-store manager had one mandated rule for every employee - the golden rule.  Although most shoppers were skinny and even described as too skinny, some came in for the experience.  Fit?  May not.  A purchase?

"Love the style.  Inspiration really," with an awkward laugh.

A friendly smile and show of positive support from every helpful employee goes a long way - the golden rule.

Author's Note : Life as a blogger

My journey as a blogger began in 2010.

In 2010, I was aware of the world of blogging but did not own a blog.  I was quite intrigued by the concept and considered professional support.  The latter went under for reasons I shall not bore you with.  And so I explored the Internet and came across Blogger.  I was floored by what Blogger had to offer.

In April 2010, I launched my very first blog.  I did not fully understand the concept of "niche," so my blog was personal in nature.  I discovered Google AdSense and in fact earned my first few dollars on my first blog.  Viewership began to slow down after a few months and I sadly deleted my first ever blog...but not without possible consideration for a new blog project.

In May 2010, I launched my first niche blog - Set List.  Anything music defines Set List, from any genre to any musician to any band to any musical outlet.  To date, Set List is my most successful blog.  If inclined, follow the Set List link to explore.

When viewership in my first blog began to decline, I explored Blogger gadgets to regain momentum.  I soon discovered The Daily Puppy.  I fell in love in a heartbeat and added the gadget to my blog.  The Daily Puppy did not necessarily further the cause, but did lead to a new blog project -
Puppy Love.  Puppy Love posts covered the history of dog breeds, best means of care for the many types of breeds, and ideal playtime with the many types of dogs.  I launched Puppy Love in November 2010 and posted frequently for a number of years.  Some time ago, I took a break from Puppy Love to write Bedtime Tails - a short story series inspired by Puppy Love.  Bedtime Tails consisted of ten stories featuring personally favorite breeds.  Each story touched on the history of the given breed in a fiction setting.  Bedtime Tails remains unpublished, but will always be special to me.

In August 2014, I signed on as a Merchandiser with the fashion jewelry brand, Chloe + Isabel.  I am not a natural saleswoman and sadly left in 2017.  However, the concept behind Chloe + Isabel stuck with me and inspired my third niche blog, Haute Couture.  Haute Couture is anything fashion, from affordable looks for the everyday woman to couture looks just to be admired.  Anything fashion includes women's apparel, beauty, accessories, and so much more.  Posts are defined by my work on Polyvore - an online source for expressing personal interest in fashion, beauty, home, and so much more.  To date, Haute Couture is tied with Set List for the most success in viewership and published posts.  If inclined, follow the Haute Couture link to explore.

And so this post brings me to my newest niche blog, Couture Tales - a blog featuring short story fiction inspired by the haute couture theme.

To conclude, my journey began in 2010 and will certainly continue on.

Princess

"A wedding fit for royalty," her father boldly declared.

"Thank you, Father, for the sentiment, but my fiance is not a prince and his parents do not sit on a throne.  A simple wedding, Father."

Her gown was royal style -

Couture design

Lace long sleeves, satin fitted shape, Swarovski crystals lining the sweetheart neckline, silk veil accenting the long length of the train, breathtaking white.

Her engagement ring was royal style -

Exclusive design

Princess cut with white gold band and sparkling diamonds surrounding a striking emerald stone set in the middle.

She was not royalty, though, and made such notion clear to her father.  Her wedding was not royal as her father was paying for what was a simple ceremony.  Her in-law family was not royal, again made clear to her father.

On the day of her wedding -

Knock, knock

"Come in," she called out as she fixed the finishing touches to her hair.

"A gift from your fiance, honey."

"Thank you, Father."

"You are beautiful and precious, sweetheart.  We may not be royal, but I will forever be honored to walk my little princess down the aisle on her magical wedding day."

"I love you, Father."

A sweet smile from both.  He left to give her privacy in opening the gift.

An intricate white box with royal embossed letterhead attached by light peach organza ribbon.

'My lovely princess,

I love you with all of my heart and soul.  You are my life.  On this our wedding day, may this gift to you be a token of how much you mean to me.

Always,

Prince Michael'

She was speechless.

The gift - a pearl- and diamond-encrusted tiara once worn by the queen of his family's origins.

She never knew.

He is royal.  The wedding will be royal.

She truly is a princess.

Family Heirloom

"I cannot believe my little girl is getting married!  I will always remember the day your father and I brought you home from the hospital.  And now twenty-six years later, you are engaged to your prince charming."

"Oh Mom, you don't have to gush."

She was quite content to let her mother gush because she was beyond thrilled and rather taken by happy surprise when he proposed.  They were together since freshman year in college and inseparable.  He was everything she wanted in a partner.  They traveled to England after graduation and on one beautiful British day, he got down on one knee in front of the gates surrounding
Buckingham Palace.  Passersby noted "So sweet" and "Congratulations" after hearing her say yes.

She happily thought that her fiance was in fact her prince charming.  She had a modestly size family and he had a large extended family, so perhaps the wedding could be royal - American style?

She returned to the conversation with her mother.

"Honey, you are my only daughter, my only child.  When your father passed away..." (a tearful sigh of widowed sorrow) "...you were my entire life.  Now you...You'll have a new name, an in-law family, a family of your own, and I...I'll be alone.  I lost my prince charming.  Am I losing you?"

"Mom, you will never lose me.  You are my BFF, my soulmate.  I have a thought.  Is Grandma's wedding gown veil still in the attic?"

"Yes!  Oh your thought!  Oh sweetheart, your father...your grandmother...They would be so honored."

"Mom, I am honored.  The veil is a family heirloom to cherish forever and pass down from generation to generation."

Trunk Show

"Hey ladies!  Welcome to my first trunk show as a Crystals jewelry stylist!" exclaimed a very excited Lauren.

"Congrats!" A happy cheer around the room.

"So how does a trunk show work?" An introductory question asked by one of the guests with a "Yeah" in followed agreement to the question.

"Well, at a trunk show, I set up a formal display of sample jewelry pieces for you to get a sense of what Crystals has to offer.  I have copies of look books you can browse through.  I have wish list forms you can fill out if there is a must have item you can't get at the moment.  I have order forms you can fill out if you are able to make a purchase.  And lastly, I have business cards...an obvious essential.

"Do you guys have any other questions for me?"

Non-verbal nope around the room.

"Okay then, so let's get this show started!"

Display holders showcased Lauren's starter kit selections.  Statement pieces received the most attention - necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings.  Swarovski crystals shimmered in every design... "So pretty" was the common response.  Gemstones were a unique feature in the necklaces... "Are the gemstones real?"  A common question.  "Yep."  An automatic response.  Cubic zirconia and silver-plated rings caught the attention of a few.  "There are matching stud earrings, hint, hint."  They laughed at her subtle suggestion, followed by an automatic "Ooh" in response.  Pearls were fancy ("Sorry, but they're not real.").  Flower petal spacer beads were somehow intriguing.  "They add to the overall aesthetic."  "Interesting."  An automatic response.

"Will these pieces wear out over time, since everything is plated?" A dominant question.

"Well, there may be some wear eventually, but the craftsmanship is high quality and will allow the jewelry to last for a long time.  Crystals has a bonus feature - lifetime money back guarantee if something is faulty."

"Okay.  Good to know." A dominant response.

Lauren was nervous by this response, but continued on as the happy go lucky hostess.

The sunlight streaming through Lauren's living room windows dazzled the jewels and enhanced the happy want (to Lauren's great relief).

Every guest took a copy of the current Crystals season look book.  Every guest immediately filled out wish lists.

Many of the guests filled out order forms (making Lauren feel quite giddy).

Everyone took multiple business cards with the promise of sharing with family, coworkers, and other friends.

At the end of the trunk show, every guest requested another get together some time soon.  "Definitely," "I had so much fun," and "Thank you" were peppered throughout the hug goodbyes.

Lauren's debut as a Crystals jewelry stylist was a profound success - $500 in sales with an excellent chance at earning more at the next trunk show.
