Ashley's Consign Shop

Ashley Simmons was the definition of a girly girl fashionista - only the prettiest of color palettes in interior design, personal appearance looks, apparel style, fashion forward in every way.

Ashley aspired to small business ownership after college graduation.  She knew her business had to relate to fashion specifically.

One day, Ashley was perusing a local consignment store and noticed the labels...all high-end luxury brands generally not possible on a realistic budget but over half off on consignment.  The more she explored, the more she realized consignment as a business would be a neat (and hopefully profitable) idea.

She continued to look around and decided to make a purchase as part of the experience - a purse, sunglasses, and cute blouse.  As a proud fashionista, Ashley knew what these items were really worth and so felt her heart drop in shock with the discount savings she was sure to receive.

As she approached the checkout counter, she noticed a "Help Wanted" sign next to the register.

The owner, sitting at the register, noticed what Ashley had on hand and briefly commented,

"Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg.  Excellent selections."

Ashley was rather excited to have these names of her own and so did not hear the remarks.

"Hi!  Um, are you still hiring?"

The owner took cue that she did not hear his remarks and replied to her question in a louder voice.

"Well hell to you!  We, actually are in a transitional phase - focusing on a younger demographic.  So we are looking to hire direct to partnership."

"That sounds intriguing!"

"I take it you may be interested?  Would you like to consider this opportunity?  I don't have a business card on hand at the moment, though...Sorry."

"That's okay.  I honestly would love to consider the opportunity!  I studied business in college, so I know the terminology.  I follow every fashion trend on a seasonal basis, so I am well-versed in the industry.  I know exactly what customers say my age - twenties - like and would buy, so I understand marketing.

"I would personally recommend deeper discounts in general, such as more than 50% off, and enticing deals for special holiday occasions - any major special holiday occasion.

"I again would consider displaying a guest list with email addresses and birthdays so you can send weekly newsletters and birthday specials."

"Wow.  Impressive!  College served you well and all of the knowledge you gained on your own!"

"Thank you!  Ashley beamed as she impressed even herself.

"What is your name, young lady?"

"Ashley Simmons."

"Hello Ashley.  My name is Samuel.  I will be upfront - how would you like to be my personal consultant?  The pay would be salaried at entry level for the first year and if you truly prove yourself beyond now, there would be a significant raise over time.  Should you  further be interested, I would love to have you as shop manager to oversee inventory from the current stock to what should be bought.  Pricing would be the most important part of the managerial position.  Income for the manager role would be an additional hourly pay at entry level.  You have profound promise in your future, Ms. Simmons.  If you accept, think of this consignment shop as yours!"

She was speechless with joy and happily accepted the job (consultant and manager).

Ashley had her own consign shop.
